Does the word process worry you? Then look no further. I’m a skilled and professional academic editor and ‘proof-reader’. I look at your written work – and also speeches and verbal presentations – and make suggestions that can only help to improve it, and it’s all done in co-operation with you and is totally legal. I don’t write the essays for you; I read them with you.
My name is John Thomson and I have fourteen years of editing experience and knowledge, which was preceded by a career as a broadcast journalist with BBC Scotland and as a subject tutor at a college in Glasgow in Communication and Media. I have an MSc in Alcohol and Drugs Studies and have worked with a range of people including refugees and asylum seekers, politicians, academics at all levels, government advisers and successful business people and, just as important as any of those, students from all over the world with different grasps of the English language and all the twists and turns it can offer. Sometimes that first undergraduate essay can be the hardest piece of writing that you do.
WHAT KIND OF WORK DO I COVER??
I am happy to edit research papers, essays, dissertations, Ph.D. theses, literature reviews, case studies and academic articles. Regardless of the subject or discipline, the finished article ensures clarity, coherence, correct grammar, proper referencing, and adherence to academic conventions; essential for students, researchers, and academics aiming for impeccable and polished academic work.
Academic work makes up most of my business and this has allowed me to build up expertise and experience in that area; for example, I am happy with the various methodologies involved in research, I know how to get the best out of a literature review and what should go into an appendix and what should remain in the body of the work – that could help with word counts. However, I also have considerable experience with magazine and journal articles, website copy and CVs. It’s always worth asking.
MY MAIN BRAND VALUES?
Experience of academic writing at all levels;
Understanding the needs of each student with whom I work; and
A positive belief in that my job is to help you get the best out of your work.
I don’t write essays for people but I do make suggestions, which you can reject or accept, that will improve your work. And can I also say that, often, lecturers have suggested to students, including PhD candidates, that their work would be better understood by approaching someone like me?
It makes sense, doesn’t it? And that’s what I do. I make sense of the word process. Which is how this website starts.
REVIEWS
‘John did an absolutely fantastic job at proof-reading my PhD thesis. He was upfront and transparent about the cost and how much time he would need, and he kept in constant contact with me throughout. He managed to turn around my thesis within the time period we had discussed, and I was so impressed with the level of detail in his feedback in relation to things like sentence structure, grammar, spelling and punctuation. My examiners commented that they couldn’t spot a single typo in my 100,000 word document! If anyone is looking for a proofreader then I highly recommend getting in touch with John.’
(Dr Jenny Hoolachan, lecturer at a Welsh University)
‘Three years ago, John graciously offered his assistance as a proofreader for my Master’s thesis, meticulously reviewing and providing valuable feedback on its content. His exceptional attention to detail and insightful suggestions left a lasting impression on me. Consequently, when the time came to seek a proficient proofreader for my PhD dissertation, I immediately thought of John’s exceptional skills and, happily, entrusted him with this significant task.’
(Victor, a successful PhD candidate)
COSTS AND CONTACT
The cost is based on the word count rather than the time spent on a piece of work. It would all be agreed well in advance and it’s good to give as much notice as possible. A covering letter confirming the fee, the guaranteed turnaround time and the fact that I do two readings serves as contract for ensuring that both of us are covered.
Payment is by Paypal.
It’s all done by e-mail without the need to meet and I have worked with students, writing in English, from all over the world.
So, if you’d like to find out how I can help you, without any obligation, please contact me on john.thompson850@ntlworld.com and let the process begin.
I look forward to hearing from you.
